How will Project Kaisei raise
awareness?
The Project Kaisei team will raise awareness of the
problem through public relations and educational activities.
Publicity
and PR
To
help draw attention to the Plastic Vortex and to the Mission. Project
Kaisei has enlisted the support and global expertise of Fleishman-Hillard
(FH), a leading global marketing and corporate communications company, with
a wealth of experience of working with NGOs, charities, academic
institutions, and individuals. FH will help Project Kaisei to formulate
strategic PR initiatives before, during and after the Mission.
PR
Plan
The goals of Project Kaisei’s PR Campaign will be to:
- Raise
awareness
of Project Kaisei and its Mission to study marine debris in the
Pacific Gyre.
- Encourage
individuals, family foundations and corporations to support the
activities of Project Kaisei.
- Help
educate
the public to the problem of marine debris and other wastes in the
ocean
The approach will be to use both online and offline
channels that will complement a professionally produced documentary about
the Mission that is planned for global multimedia release following the
first Mission.
1)
Raise Awareness
A comprehensive media program will announce the Mission,
highlighting Project Kaisei’s objectives and fund-raising efforts. This
program will be supported by ongoing interviews with global press
representatives and speaking engagements where Project Kaisei
representatives are able to attend.
2)
Encourage Donations
In April, Project Kaisei will publicly launch its
volunteer program through media relations and direct marketing. The winning
volunteers will be announced via media in both regional and local press. In
June, a press conference will be held to announce the key funding partners
and to formally launch the Mission.
3)
Educate the Public
Education will take place primarily through the
organization’s website on the Mission http://www.projectkaisei.org/,
which will contain text, images and multimedia such as video and Google
mapping applications. Throughout the mission, the website will be updated
to include visual and text vignettes about life on the Mission - the
challenges and the developments.
Hong Kong will also host an art exhibition, specially
designed by two California artists, using waste plastic found on the
world’s beaches. The exhibition will be a platform for further media
relations, including interviews with artists, to educate the public about
the problems of plastic waste in our oceans.
